Home insurance covers your house against sudden and accidental damage, such as fire, storms and flooding, and includes legal liability and temporary accommodation if you can’t live there. Venture’s brokers compare house insurance across insurers and help you set the right sum insured.
Protect your biggest investment with confidence. A typical home insurance policy includes:
- Cover for Your Actual Home
Protection against sudden and accidental damage to your home from events like fire, storms, floods, and natural disasters. Tools to establish a sum insured can be accessed, however a professional valuation is always recommended. - Temporary Accommodation
If your home is uninhabitable after an insured event, there is typically cover for the cost of temporary housing while repairs are underway. - Legal Liability Protection
Covers you if you accidentally damage someone else’s property or someone is injured on your property. - Optional Extras
Various optional extras can apply, depending on the insurer.
This cover is essential for all home owners, specifically if you have finance on the property, as your lender will require it. Subject to variations in insurers’ wording, exclusions and case specific endorsements.
How much should I insure my house for?
Most NZ home insurance is based on a sum insured: the most the insurer will pay to rebuild. It should reflect the full rebuild cost, including demolition, professional fees and council costs, not the market value of your property. Building costs change, so check your sum insured at every renewal.
Natural disaster damage is also covered by NHCover from the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, up to $300,000 plus GST for your home. Your private insurer covers the rest up to your sum insured.
